Lualaba Confirms Official Toll of Mulondo Mining Disaster

Mulondo Mining Tragedy: Official Death Toll Reaches 35 as Lualaba Authorities Launch Full Investigation

Following a meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, held with the delegation led by the Minister of Mines, Lualaba authorities released the official and provisional death toll from the Mulondo mining site tragedy: 35 confirmed deaths and 2 survivors.

The expanded meeting of the Security Committee included cooperative leaders and representatives of artisanal miners from the Mulondo site, ensuring broad participation in evaluating the situation.

Updated Death Toll and Survivor Status

According to information from the provincial Ministry of Health:

26 bodies are currently held at the Mwangeji General Referral Hospital morgue.

7 bodies are at the Mupandja Hospital morgue.

2 victims have already been buried by their families.

Two survivors have been formally identified:

Mr. Nyembo, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, is receiving treatment at Mwangeji Hospital.

Mr. Mwamba Gilbert, aged 18, discovered in Kando, has been transferred to Kolwezi for specialized care.

The Lualaba Provincial Government reiterated its condolences to the affected families, affirming that teams—supported by specialized services—are finalizing victim identification.

Support Measures and Ongoing Investigation

Provincial teams continue to provide social and psychological support to survivors and families. They have also secured the Mulondo site and launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the tragedy and identify those responsible.

Inquiry Into Minister’s Plane Incident

Regarding the plane crash involving the Minister of Mines and his delegation, authorities confirm that all crew members are safe. An investigation is underway to identify the causes and establish accountability.

Government Calls for Calm and Transparency

The provincial government urges the population to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Authorities assure that all steps in the process will be handled with complete transparency.
